Rise Against brings their Fall US Tour to Portland
By Christinia Hall
The night was a sea of black jeans, hoodies, and flannel ready to rock out to Rise Against supported by LS Dunes, and Cloud Nothings.
Cloud Nothings started the night off. Two guitarists and a drummer from Ohio played a sound with a retro feel that filled the space. LS Dunes followed shortly after. The band consists of members from My Chemical Romance, Coheed and Cambria, Thursday, and Circa Survive. The lead singer, Anthony Green, had vocals that were hard to compare but seemed to have a familiar and complimentary mix of Chester Bennington's screams and Billy Corgan's wails. The band was very gracious for being part of the lineup that night.
Rise Against started 30 minutes later beginning with "Satellite". Shortly followed by "Give It All", where Tim McIlrath stood on the barricade and interacted with the crowd. Things started to take it up a notch with "Help is on the Way." The mosh pit began to mix and crowd surfers because to be seen throughout the night. Concert-goers sang along to "The Good Left Undone" The band took a short pause to talk with the crowd about how much they enjoyed Portland, especially Roseland Theater. McIlrath also called out the fan dressed up as Shrek who was at the barricade. Shortly after was an acoustic start of "Hero of War" followed by "Swing Life Away." McIlrath joked that most people found them by that latter song and probably were surprised to hear there were no other ballades, but somehow stuck with them. The night continued on with hits like "Prayer of the Refugee" and McIlrath carried himself stoically, but also with energy and he screamed into the mic. After a very brief break, the band finished off the night with a three-song encore, ending with the most anticipated and perfect end to the night, "Savior."
