By BOB HOWARD // Austin native makes his move to establish himself among the best in Portland
Teddy Martin Jr. has been in Portland with his family for almost a decade, but he hasn’t strayed far from his love of creating music. He released his first single in many years last Valentine’s day. He told us how great that felt. At Oregon Music News we are thrilled to introduce a new artist to our audience.
Teddy’s first single is a magical interpretation of Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You."
Tom D’Antoni, the editor of Oregon Music News, shared his first impression, “he reminds me of Andy Stokes," two-time inductee in the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.
That’s pretty high praise. The legendary Andy Stokes, The Northwest King of Soul Music, has been sharing his soulful voice and undeniable musical mastery with the world for more than 3 decades. The singer-songwriter, a two-time inductee to Oregon’s Music Hall of Fame and multiple regional award winner, is known for his powerful vocals and unforgettable live performances.
Singer-Songwriter Gary Furlow and recently retired Director of Productions at Artichoke Music listened and offered, “Very, very good voice. Reminds me of a lot of 70s and 80s R&B. Very smooth, good arrangement. Sweet choice of a song choice. He’s taken Michael Jackson’s song that was nice and poppy and really turned it into something very soulful. Nice work!”
Talking with Teddy about his release he shared, “The entire project was recorded in Houston, Texas, and Los Angeles, California. As a native Texan and having toured with major recording artists while living in Los Angeles, the vast majority of my musical connections are in those two states.”
Teddy produced the recording with Bishop “Stick” Burrell at Ultimate Sound Studios, Houston, Texas. Bishop was the engineer on the project, and the musicians featured Trinidad and Tobago born rapper Papa Reu (Rueben Nero). Bishop Burrell played the instruments and did all the post productions.
Bishop "Stick" Burrell is a renowned music producer and recording engineer, best known for his work with the R&B group H-Town, including producing hits like "Knockin' The Boots."
Burrell has extensive credits as a producer, arranger, and engineer on albums for Luke Records, including H-Town's Fever for da Flavor.
Teddy is looking forward to touring. No band just yet, but I do have musicians on standby itching to support me when I am ready and able to tour. He would love to perform and he would welcome local TV show invitations and radio airplay!
More releases are coming. “My goal is to make each release a strategic one. There's no timetable, but when I feel it's necessary to release a new track, I absolutely will. I'd like to reach as many listeners as possible in hopes of creating a new music family, while also attracting the attention of a professional level manager who shares my ambitions and vision.”
He told us that “He’s been inspired, supported, and encouraged by an army of singers, musicians, friends, and family over many years of my musical journey. I'm eternally grateful for every one of them! This journey is proving to be a lot of work, but it's something that I am proud of, so it's absolutely worth the time and effort. I am grateful to have people like you want to lend a hand, an ear and a desire to share my music with others. THANK YOU SO MUCH!”
