Sons of Apollo at the Hawthorne Theatre on 04/29/18 Photos

By BRENT ANGELO //

The Hawthorne Theater hosted a show of epic proportions. Sons of Apollo played their first ever Portland show.

The band features Jeff Scott Soto (Trans-Siberian Orchestra) on lead vocals, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal (Art of Anarchy, Guns N' Roses) on guitar, Billy Sheehan (The Winery Dogs, Mr. Big, David Lee Roth) on bass, Derek Sherinian (Black Country Communion, Dream Theater) on keyboards, and Mike Portnoy (The Winery Dogs, Dream Theater) on drums.

They gave us the album, “Psychotic Symphony”, which they are currently supporting on their world tour. As powerful as the music is on record, these songs shined even more in the live concert setting. Seeing a band like this performing in an intimate place like the Hawthorne made for quite the experience too. When you are up close and personal with musicians like Ron Thal or Billy Sheehan, you see firsthand just how incredibly talented these musicians are.

Sons of Apollo kicked off the night strong with “God of the Sun”. The band would go on and play most of their new album, touching on covers from their past career works and when they took their final bows had played a nearly two-hour set.
