By SCOTT CUNNINGHAM // In southern rock, no one does it better right now
Southern rockers Blackberry Smoke cruise into Portland Wednesday night for a date at the Roseland Theater in what is sure to be one of the better rockin' and partyin' nights of the summer.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is the most obvious comparison for the band, but falls a little short as Blackberry weaves a heaping dose of outlaw country into their sound as well as touches of bluegrass, southern soul, and even a bit of honky tonk. As might be expected, guitars reign in the band's sound, but they also have remarkably tight harmonies, some soulful grooves, and polished lyrics.
Last year's release "Like an Arrow" debuted at number one of both the Billboard Country chart and the Americana chart. The album showcases the band's versatility, ranging from the hard-driving Waiting For the Thunder to the more laid back grooves of Free On the Wing (featuring Greg Allman) and the mandolin infused sweetness of Ain't Gonna Wait.
ON TOUR: Blackberry Smoke appears at the Roseland Theater in Portland on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. Doors are 8:00PM and tickets are still available as of this writing.
Editor's note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated the show date as Tuesday, August 2. The correct date is Wednesday, Auguest 2, and the article has been changed to reflect the correct date. We regret the error.
