BEST OF 2018: Dandy Warhols' Zia McCabe cooks with Marti in Episode 8 of Marti's Music Kitchen

By MARTI MENDENHALL // OMN BEST OF 2018: Zia McCabe of the Dandy Warhols cooks up "ZIA’S CAN’T GO WRONG CROCKPOT CHILLI."

Here is the final OMN's Best of 2018. We asked our writers and podcasters to pick their favorite post of the year. Marti picked this one.

On this Episode of Marti’s Music Kitchen, we are stirring up a batch of hot, hearty “Can’t Go Wrong Crockpot Chili,” with Zia McCabe, the synth, bass and percussionist for The Dandy Warhols. She is also a successful real estate agent for Windermere, as “A to Zia” Real Estate in Portland, Oregon.  In addition, she’s also been “Saving good parties from bad music since 2001” as DJ RESCUE.

“If you were relying on this to pay your bills, it’s so easy to zap some of that joy,” says Zia.  “And that’s how I started to feel about music, is like - man, I want to play music, not work music.”

Zia is one of the few musicians to dovetail the nightlife of being performing musician and DJ with the day job of real estate. Preventing the eventual burn-out of touring, and preserving the joy of all things music.

How does she flip the switch from her on-stage persona to living a quote unquote “Normal” life? And why is Chili one of her favorite “easy” things to cook? Listen to check it out.  (Recipe below.)
