By Scott Cunningham // Alt-country rockers touring in support of new album
Sometimes it can be tough to describe the sound of a band and the Dead Winter Carpenters have had me thinking hard about how to convey in words what they sound like. Fourtunately, I don't really have to because you can check them out tonight at the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland.
It would be easy to just say they fit under the big umbrella that Americana has become, but that doesn't go far to describing any one band, let alone DWC. At their core, you could say they are an offshoot of string bands, but that also doesn't fully capture what this five-piece group is all about.
Their new album Washoe, released in January, also adds in a traditional country feel alongside elements of classic rock and even contains some rockabilly elements. Washoe is well worth checking out, especially for fans of artists such as Lindi Ortega, JD McPherson, and Yonder Mountain String Band.
ON TOUR: Dead Winter Carpenters perform tonight March 3 at the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland. Tickets are still available. Doors are at 8:00 p.m., with Gipsy Moon opening at 9:00 p.m.
