Saxophonist Bartz: No such thing as Jazz or improvisation? The master musician speaks - audio - PDX Jazz Festival 2016

By Tom D'Antoni // He'll be at the PDX Jazz Festival 2016 on February 20

OMN is happy to be a media sponsor of the PDX Jazz festival again this year.

It was a most interesting conversation. Master saxophonist Gary Bartz who has played with  Art Blakey, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Pharaoh Sanders, Gene Ammons and many more, was on the phone. He was in New Jersey, driving to his hometown of Baltimore, MD and into a blizzard. He was undaunted. He was also very surprising as he happily revealed his philosophy of what he does.

No such thing as Jazz? What? Nor improvisation? Really? Yes.

Listen:

You can see Gary Bartz at the PDX Jazz Festival with James King, bass, Paul Bollenback, guitar, Greg Bandy, drums
