By PAUL WARD // Listen to these stories by Saeeda Wright (vocals and compositions), Cheryl Alex (flute, vocals, composition), and Kathleen Hollingsworth (piano, vocals, composition) — all three performing this week at The 1905’s extraordinary Women In Jazz week

Paul K. Ward captured video and audio interviews of several of Portland’s top women jazz performers.  Listen to these stories by Saeeda Wright (vocals and compositions), Cheryl Alex (flute, vocals, composition), and Kathleen Hollingsworth (piano, vocals, composition) — all three performing this week at The 1905’s extraordinary Women In Jazz week. The 1905 has been investing more in raising up the talents in the local jazz scene — and this time around, it’s all about the women.

These interviews are just a taste of the richness of the talent, music, compositions, and groups on the calendar this week at The 1905, with all shows live-streamed for your viewing (and tipping) pleasure by 88.8 Films. Live streaming is supported by a generous grant whose funding comes through the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble.

Each interview gives you insight into the past, present, and point of view of each of these diverse, talented performers. They represent the best of Portland’s music scene, and we are thrilled they took time to sit down with us.

Saeeda Wright's broad experience in soul, jazz, and R&B includes performances with Stevie Wonder and Prince, and continues here in her hometown of Portland, Oregon. A teacher, performer, and recording artist, she knows how to deliver terrific performances with an explosive and embracing style. Her upcoming show at The 1905 sees her on stage with some of the region's very best musicians.

Cheryl Alex is a busy jazz professional in Portland, Oregon, performing, teaching, and recording as a side person and leader on jazz flute, voice, and piano. She sits down with Paul to talk about her career, projects, and upcoming show as part of the Ed Bennett quintet for The 1905's Women in Jazz week.
