By MATT HANSEN // Drag event celebrating Marvel's mutants is now in it's third year and features even more celebrity guests and live performances
Last Year’s Homo Superior event took place only 3 days after the first season of X-Men ‘97 ended, which may have been a strategic move to allow ticketholders of the event to see the season finale before attending. Now it in its 3rd year, Homo Superior remains energized by X-Men ’97’s steaming presence, and will allow fans to relive the glory days of the 90s when the X-Men cartoon delighted our imaginations every Saturday morning.
On Saturday May 17th at The Get Down, the X-Men cartoon will unite fans once again, and this time not through their viewership, but in person and in full costume. And while the 90s were a dismal time for X-Men comics, fans whole heartedly can agree on their fond memories of watching the cartoon, thus giving Homo Superior a new theme to celebrate.
“The first Homo Superior was disco era, last year was the X-Men of the 80's, my personal favorite with a heavy influence of New Wave music, and this year we're doing quite possibly the loudest era of X-Men, the 90's,” explains event creator Evan Stewart. “The 90s was when X-Men broke into the mainstream, big time, with the launch of X-Men: The Animated Series on Fox. This was the intro to the X-Men for a lot of people in my generation, and visually it had a very distinct style and tone.”
That style was no exception to the 90s comic trend of super heroes wearing brown leather jackets over their uniforms, and that tone could easily be summed up by the cartoon’s theme written by Ron Wasserman. During the shows intro we see the X-Men galvanized to fight back against a world and other mutants who do not accept them. Each X-Men demonstrates their powers, Rogue destroys her sentinel pursuer, and others stand tall together in facing the uncertainty of human judgement.
But exactly where is the intersection where X-Men music and drag performance meet? Enter Tunde Olaniran, featured live musical guest of this year’s Homo Superior. “Tunde came to my attention with their track "Jean Grey," an ethereal ode to the matron of the X-Men that manages to be rife with spot-on X-Men references without being corny or dulling the edge of the rapid-fire rap portion of the track,” gushes Stewart. “Our event hostess, D'Manda Martini, went viral performing to this track back in 2021, and Tunde has personally credited her with making "Jean Grey" their top-streaming track. This event will be their first time meeting and performing together” confirms Stewart.
Also performing will be RuPaul's Drag Race Season 16 finalist, Megami, who blew audiences away with her performances in the Lip-Sync LaLaPaRuza Smackdown. Tier 1 tickets have just sold out but Tier 2 tickets are still available. And if you’re planning on dressing up, blue and gold are your safest bet ⊗
