Deer Tick bring double dose of music to Wonder Ballroom this weekend

BY SCOTT CUNNINGHAM // Band's latest release is a double-album full of contrasting styles.

Bands that fall in the spaces between musical genres have tremendous flexibility. Some get lost in that amount of creative freedom. Others, like Deer Tick, thrive.

Simultaneously folksy, funky, soulful, and rocking, the band has carved out a solid niche with their eclectic mixture. They hit the Wonder Ballroom in Portland on Sunday, Nov. 5, in support of their recent double-album release.

Not double-album as in a two-CD set. Two different albums, "Deer Tick Vol. 1" and "Deer Tick Vol. 2". The former is largely acoustic, with guitars, piano, and spacious lyrics. The latter is more firmly rooted in the band's longtime mashup style of garage band meets electric Dylan meets southern soul, with a twist of punkish funk thrown in for good measure.

The two albums are a project that fans were justified in wondering if the band would ever release new material. Formed in 2004, the Rhode Island based band had a solid ten-year run before taking an impromptu break for several years as they took a breather, started families, and became accustomed to a more laid back lifestyle not dominated by constantly being on the road and producing new material.

Sunday's show should be a real treat. Comedian Jena Friedman kicks things off with an opening set before Deer Tick takes the stage for two sets of their own. The first will be a stripped down acoustic affair, similar in style to the "Vol. 1" album. After a short break, the band turns up the volume with a full electric set more in line with the "Vol. 2" album.

ON TOUR: Deer Tick appear at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland on Sunday, November 5, 2017. Comedian Jen Friedman kicks off the evening. Doors 7:30PM. Tickets are still available.
