Cypress Hill w/ The Oregon Symphony, Oct. 18th at Arlene Schnitzer

By MATT HANSEN //  Cypress Hill offers fans a unique opportunity to see a 27 year old joke play out in real life

In 1996 Cypress Hill had an unlikely encounter with the London Symphony Orchestra that has gone on to help define the band’s place in pop culture. And while this all happened as animation rather than real life, it doesn’t make it any less memorable. In “The Simpsons” episode “Homerpalooza,” the beloved long-running cartoon took at satirical swipe at the emerging musical festival culture brought on by Lollapalooza, one that featured an animated Cypress Hill alongside a who’s who of the 90s-alternative rock scene.

Among all the wild tour antics featured in the episode, the one that stands out the most happens when the London Symphony Orchestra arrives for a gig with Cypress Hill, who had forgotten they booked them, simply because they were high. But making the most of the situation, Cypress Hill utilizes the symphony for a short but sweet rendition of “Insane in the Brain,” their dance moves immortalized in animation forever.

But you no longer have to wonder what that paring would sound like in real life – and you don’t have to suffer a music festival to experience it either. Cypress Hill will be performing with the Oregon Symphony on October 18th at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, as the hip-hop group is hell-bent on further proving the writers of “The Simpsons” to be clairvoyant. A performance that will bring tracks like “Hits from the Bong” to life with a new glorious stringed accompaniment. Moreover, B-Real, Sen Dog, and DJ Muggs have more to celebrate than the brilliance of “life imitates art,” as they recently toasted to the 30-year anniversary of their triple platinum album “Black Sunday.”

If you’re longing to go back to when smoking weed was legally risky – and the word Coachella was not yet both loved and reviled – this show will spark your interest.

ON TOUR: Cypress Hill at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Wednesday, October 18th, 2023. Show 7:30PM. (Tickets). Recommended for ages 16 and older
