Cleverly described as Fox No Bones, Scott Gilmore was too ill to perform at Al's Den on Friday November 22. Sarah delivered mostly original songs, stripped bare to their essence with just voice and guitar. On a few songs, she was accompanied by her “emotional support harmonica player,” Bill Hefferman. Emotive vocals and exceptional songwriting were especially evident on “Roots”, “Over The Edge”, and “Love Me Better”. Although it was a different set than originally planned, the audience was treated to emotionally honest originals and an excellent cover of the Eagles “Desperado”. Sometimes, when a song is stripped down, it brings out facets that weren’t apparent in the studio with a full band.
Next up was J.B. Barton, hailing from Sacramento, California. He showcased his excellent singing voice and guitar playing as well as a great sense of humor on songs like “The Wrong Bars” and “The Children’s Song”. “The Salad Song” had fun audience participation as they acted out salad making steps. Six-year-old children and adults drinking alcohol really like this song. J.B. took a turn at the Michael McDonald vocal on “What A Fool Believes” and he passed the test. The Lonnie Johnson blues song, “Jellyroll Baker”, with great blues guitar picking, was the highlight of the set.
