By MATT HANSEN // Shrek-themed rave makes it's first 2026 appearance in Portland at The Get Down
If you’ve never been to Shrek Rave, it’s about time you experience a dance party completely devoted to your favorite fairy tale fandom. But is Shrek not your thing? Or are you worried about appearing cool on the dance floor of The Get Down? This party is in no way about being cool, and it’s fan-service approach has already spawned imitators like Sunny Rave: A Rave Tribute to Always Sunny. Anti-cool or not, Shrek Rave’s inclusiveness of the uncool has found its cultural sweet spot making it worthy of your consideration, even if you never seen Shrek.
But if you’re saying “I've seen Shrek, what does the movie have to do with electronic music?” for the answer to that you would have to go back more than a decade. Shrek’s incorporation into electronic music began with the YouTube video “What Are You Doing In My Swamp Remix” which has amassed over 9 million views since 2014. It's a minimal sampling of one of Shrek's iconic lines, but the video is so closely tied to Shrek Rave that it comes up under the search term 'Shrek Rave' on YouTube. Any of the EDM remixes of Shrek songs you will hear at Shrek Rave all began with this first step of uniting ogre and donkey voices with electronic music production.
Last year Shrek Rave’s newest techno-focused incarnation, SHREKNO, took over Wonderlove and in 2024 Shrek Rave came through Portland twice. It’s an event that definitely appeals to Portland’s love of costume party frivolity; that very same notion that can turn tense protests into danceable celebrations of non-violence.
And there will be many costumes at Shrek Rave, for the purposes of becoming the computer-generated characters of Dreamworks rather than protesting the current dystopia we find ourselves in. From the spin off Puss in Boots to the even more obscure characters like Britanny of Britanny, you’re sure to see a few unexpected characters from the film’s medieval world. A world better suited for us to experience joy and excitement rather than our actual reality right now.
So if you want to relive the early 2000s, internet humor is your go-to, or you have leftover green face paint, make Shrek Rave the cure to for all your troubles. Newbies welcome.
