Tomahawk, August 10th at Pioneer Courthouse Square - Preview

Wherever Mike Patton goes, the label of ‘supergroup’ is sure to follow. Formed around 1999-2000, Tomahawk was only the second band that Patton had recruited players for and properly flexed the tag of supergroup. It’s been 25 years since the first Tomahawk album Mit Gas, the inception of that band forcing Patton, fresh from the breakup of Faith No More, to divide his time between Tomahawk and his first supergroup, Fantômas.

25 years later and plenty has changed for Tomahawk, but Tomahawk’s sound hasn’t changed at all. Their last album, 2021’s Tonic Immobility stands up well against the bands back catalog as their intensity is even more charged by the uncertainty of today's world. Patton’s shouting vocals still have that tinge of crazy, and Duane Denison (The Jesus Lizard) serves up dicey riffs and brainy chords that still land somewhere between alternative and experimental. The rhythm of John Stainer (Helmet) on the kit is still impeccable yet aggressive, while the low end of Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle) has complex fingerings for days still as sharp as the day he took over bass duties for the band. 

And together with The Melvins, an inspiration and labelmate to Patton on Ipecac Recordings, these two bands will take over Pioneer Courthouse Square on Monday August 10th. And with an early start time this promises to be the best bet at entertaining your avant-garde rock loving self and still getting to bed at a decent hour.
