By BOB HOWARD // Portland's Folk Festival...Two Days Squeezed into One / Plus....video interviews at the scene.
A super lineup took the stage at the Crystal Ballroom on February 4th to close Portland's Folk Festival 2024. The ballroom and Lola's Room provided alternating stages for 21 artists appearing on Super Sunday.
After snow, ice, and wind shutdown Portland for a week, the folk festival rebounded. Three weeks after the storm the show went on. All but one artist on the original line-up returned. Co-producer Scott Gilmore (Fox and Bones) said, "all I could think about was how we could revive the festival. All the artists were amazing and the Crystal Ballroom was behind us. I didn't get much sleep."
The artists were grateful. Breedlove artist Chris Couch was full of praise for the effort to keep the Festival alive. "I am endlessly grateful that they decided to continue to go for it. When somebody has a dream and they decide to make it happen, that's my favorite thing in the world."
Portland's Folk Festival has distinguished itself by the diversity of genres presented at the five festivals staged since 2018. Individuals, duos, bands, acoustic, full bands, R&B, Pop, Folk, Indie, Singer-Songwriter, and Rock all represent folk music at the festival. It is personal for Scott and Sarah, the co-producers, "we hope to bring a wide range of music from creative people we know locally and those we have met as we tour the country."
Two dollars from every ticket sold benefitted Music Portand's Echo Fund and donations of warm clothing collected at the door benefitted All Good NW.
