The Norman Sylvester Band celebrated 40 years of music in front of a packed house at the Alberta Rose Theater on Sunday night with his current and former band members featuring Rob Shoemaker, Lenanne Sylvester-Miller, LaRhonda Steele, Arietta Ward, Renato Caranto, Peter Moss, Frankie Redding, Paul Shoemaker, Jay “Bird” Coder, and Kim Field.
Norman shared many stories including the origins of his band, performing at the first Waterfront Blues Festival, and opening for BB King. He also performed a moving tribute honoring the late Janice Scroggins, singing her favorite song. Also included in the program was an unveiling of my new painting of Norman. When I looked at him after removing the cover from the painting, tears were streaming down his face.
Norman is a true icon and beloved in the community. He put on an incredible concert, and at the end of the evening he and his band continued to play as everyone danced their way out of the theater.
