Mavis Staples is a national treasure, and at 86 years old, her voice is as strong as ever. Performing on the final weekend of the Portland Jazz Festival, she was backed by her band, and longtime guitarist Rick Holstrom who she lovingly referred to as her "boss". She vowed to "keep on marching" and to bring the audience "some joy, happiness, and positive vibrations" and she did. There were shouts of "we love you Mavis" throughout the evening, to which she responded "I love you too". She said she wanted everyone to feel better than when they first came in, and judging by the cheers and smiles, they did.
To begin the evening, PDX Jazz also honored the great Shirley Nanette with its 2026 Jazz Master Award. Unfortunately, Shirley was unable to be there and the award was accepted on her behalf by Julianne Johnson, who then gave a strong performance to open the show.
