John Moreland brings his Big Bad Luv to the Aladdin on Thursday

By SCOTT CUNNINGHAM // New album is his strongest work yet

John Moreland is out with a new album titled "Big Bad Luv" and swings through Portland this Thursday with a date at the Aladdin Theater. In a preview like this, I'd normally focus on the new music and share with our loyal readers how solid the album is, which is true. But, just this once, we're going a different direction.

Instead of talking in depth about BBL, let's go back to February 2, 2016, when Moreland made his national television debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Sitting with just an acoustic guitar, Moreland launched into Break My Heart Sweetly, found on his 2013 release "In the Throes". While the cameras held tight shots of him and never showed the audience, it is easy to figure out that the crowd was utterly silent, with Moreland holding their attention with his beautifully crafted lyrics, hypnotizing vocals, and sparesly, but expertly, fingerpicked guitar.

The crowd was dead silent. Until they weren't and launched into a very rare standing ovation for a musical performance on late night television.

At a mere $15 in advance, tickets for this show might very well give you the best bang for your buck in any Portland venue this year.

Don't miss this one, folks.

ON TOUR: John Moreland visits the Aladdin Theater in Portland on Thursday, August 10, 2017. Doors are 7:00PM / Show 8:00PM. Tickets are still available as of this writing.
