IMMORTALIS FEST w/ Meldamor: Oct. 3rd - 4th @ The Coffin / Preview

By MATT HANSEN // Kick off your October right with Portland's 2-day darkwave festival at The Coffin featuring band's like Meldamor, who just released the new album "True Sacrifice"

Now in its third year, Immortalis Fest at The Coffin showcases the elite of darkwave bands on the first weekend of October. With its dark, undead sounding name, Immortalis is the premiere opportunity to celebrate the increasing amount of darkness we experience post autumn equinox. "I named the fest Immortalis because I like the idea of romanticizing the afterlife and playing into The Coffin's dark/goth theme," explains festival organizer Yvette Velasquez, "Immortalis is Latin for "Immortal," and using latin carries a sense of drama and ritual, making it feel sacred and kind of spooky. I think of it as a gathering beyond the veil where the night never dies."

This year's Friday line up will feature Phoenix's Meldamor, whose new album True Sacrifice was just released today. Mel Parley was kind enough to answer our questions on the eve of her new album release.

Oregon Music News: I'm very excited for your new album, what does the title "True Sacrifice" mean to you?

Mel Parley: True Sacrifice for us means we are completely creating the true sacrifice by touring and focusing on our music. We’ve released albums in the past with no tours and the last year we completed our first tour. At this moment we aren’t stopping, which is the true sacrifice.

OMN: A lot of the sounds in your music seem to really capture the spirit of the night. Do you have a method for arriving at those kinds of sounds, or do you happen to be nocturnal?

MP: For the most part it usually starts with Dave signature beats and then I (Mel) begin to write lyrics after. It’s more about capturing the moments emotion.

OMN: The flyer for a show you have in Phoenix in November seems to prominently feature Castle Grayskull. Are there any heroic fantasy figures that have influenced your songs?

MP: The cover of True Sacrifice actually came from inspiration from Conan and Valeria, we are heavily inspired by fantasy. Masters of the Universe and Lord of the Rings are some of our favorites. Music wise we write from our emotional state not so much by fantasy figures.

OMN: To me your name sounds like a female viking name like 'Dagmar'. Do you get a lot of questions on the origin of your name?

MP: We do get questions about the meaning of our name and there’s actually a double meaning.

OMN: How did your collab with Dark Chisme on the song "Tonight Tonight" come about?

MP: We played together with Dark Chisme on some of our first shows of the My Ode To You tour in 2024 and really clicked. They’re sweethearts and genuine people. We talked about collab after our shows together. Dave had made a song a while back and we sent to Dark Chisme who then added to the track. "Tonight Tonight" is such a fun beautiful song. It was fun times and I think it captured our friendship perfectly.
