Halloween Fetish Ball w/ XTR HUMAN: Oct. 16th at The Coffin - Preview

This spooky season don't go to just any party, go to an event that full encourages you to obscure your identity while making clear your predilections; Halloween Fetish Ball on Friday Oct. 16th at The Coffin. It's just one of the many parties The Coffin will be throwing in October, when the club's supernatural power is at its peak. But Halloween Fetish Ball is the party you won't want to miss if you're a well-behaved individual and your favorite type of costume is one of strong sexual expression.

Before you ask yourself, no one will be completely naked at Halloween Fetish Ball; think of an Oregon Country Fair dress code where everything but your crotch will be visible. Attendees may take the forms of everything from sinister nurses to the Cenobites from Hellraiser, and everything leather and latex in-between with boundless dark creativity. 

Halloween Fetish Ball will also include burlesque performances and shibari demos intertwined with the nights musical acts, Dildox (Los Angeles), God Tongue (Seattle), and hailing from Berlin, a city that sets the example for sexual freedom will be XTR Human (Johannes Stabel). We caught up with Johannes ahead of his appearance at Halloween Fetish Ball to talk European Halloween, horror movies, and Berlin nightlife.

Oregon Music News: You play The Coffin quite a lot on tour. Does it feel like a home when you’re here?

XTR HUMAN: Yeah, I really love Portland and the scene there, and if it’s possible, I always make sure to come by. Every show at Coffin Club is so unique, and everyone is really nice. So it’s always one of the highlights of my US tours.

OMN: Are you a fan of shibari? Are there any fetish events you have been involved with in Berlin?

XTR: I wouldn’t call myself an expert on shibari, but I really appreciate that Berlin has so many different forms of self-expression. Growing up in a smaller town in southern Germany, I simply did not come across that side of nightlife as much as I did after moving to Berlin. It was not that there was no culture or openness at all, but in Berlin these scenes are much more visible and easy to access.

I never organized fetish events myself, but I enjoy taking part in the wider club culture around them. I like going to queer parties, techno nights, Berghain, KitKat, and similar places. It is a part of Berlin that I value a lot.

OMN: Do you celebrate Halloween in Berlin? Or do you go really hard on Walpurgisnacht?

XTR: When I was growing up, Halloween was not really a big thing in Germany yet. I think it only became more popular in the late ’90s. We did not really have Halloween parties like people know them now. As kids, we mostly did stupid little pranks, like throwing wet toilet paper into people’s letterboxes.

But Halloween is much bigger in Berlin now. This year we are playing Unterwelt Festival on Halloween, organized by our friends NNHMN. It has this proper Halloween-party and festival feeling.

OMN: I remember you mentioning somewhere that you love action films. Are you a fan of horror films? 

XTR: I’m a big fan of action films, but of course I also love horror movies. I’m not so much into newer horror films that only work with jump scares or try to be as disgusting as possible. I prefer films that create fear through atmosphere, the setting, and the feeling that something is not right.

I’m also a big fan of The Backrooms. I was already following the story when it started on YouTube around three years ago, and I really loved it. So I was very excited about the movie that recently came out.

Recently I got really into Korean and Japanese horror again, Cure, Pulse, the original Ring, Dark Water. They are amazing because they have this mystery and very unsettling atmosphere. But I also love the classic American stuff: Hellraiser, Cronenberg, body horror, all of that.

OMN: Have you ever seen an incorrect translation of your lyrics? 

XTR: Not really, I can’t think of any incorrect translation that stands out. But it is always funny and really nice to see people outside of Germany singing along to German words. It makes me very happy that people learn the lyrics, even if they don’t speak German. Maybe I can be a small ambassador for silly German words. I always have to smile when people scream ‘SCHRANK!’”

OMN: You released ‘Rave God’ this past spring. Will we hear another XTR Human single before the end of ’26?

XTR: Yes, definitely. I’m already preparing something new to release, so there will be another single coming pretty soon. I also have a lot of new music prepared that I want to release.
