By BRENT ANGELO // Duff McKagan introduced a new album with a Country Flavor, a real departure from Guns N Roses.

Duff McKagan is on a eleven city tour in support of his new acoustic album, Tenderness and Oregon Music News was the only outlet there to cover the Portland show. With his album's Producer "Shooter" Jennings (son of country legend Waylon Jennings) and his band, this tour brings Duff's new record.

The album and show are a real departure from Guns N' Roses, which Duff McKagan is best known for. The album's music is a mixture of Southern Rock and Country. The lyrics are also very personal. At the Aladdin show, those words hit even harder live.

Before "Feel", Duff spoke of the loss of friends and musicians dear to him. He started with his friend and former Velvet Revolver band mate, Scott Weiland, who passed away in 2015. He then noted the losses of Prince and Chris Cornell and by that time he was genuinely shaken, visually heartbroken and was just trying to keep going onstage. It was a powerful and highly personal moment that just heightened the lyrics of the live "Feel" that followed. Duff showed his passion and frustration in "Parkland", which touched on the shootings in Parkland and Columbine.

As fans held LED candles and lighters, the frustration and feeling were shared. The show was not all sadness though. It included reminiscing of good memories of past Portland playing live in his beloved Punk Rock days at the 13th Precinct. These memories would be a good tie in into the Clash's "Clampdown". There were also and of course a few Guns N' Roses songs that really got this acoustic show rocking.

Two tracks from Use Your Illusion, Vol 1 really stood out. "Dead Horse" was great live and "Dust N' Bones" was the show's highlight. Duff noted that the response, saying honestly Portland had given the best response yet. The show was really a unique insight into the person and musician that Duff is. In truth, it the turnout was disappointing. The show was far from a sell out and should have been.

While the masses tend to only support the "greatest hits", albums and shows like this give fans a rare and up-close chance to really get to know the people and artists in the bands they love. This was not a Guns N' Rose's show by far but if more GNR fans would have gone they would have gained an even deeper appreciation for those songs and one of its key musicians in that band.
