By MATT HANSEN // Canadian electronic artist will play Mississippi Studios to promote the new album 'Chin Up Buttercup'
Released last November, Chin Up Buttercup, is another effort of veiled social commentary by Austra (Katie Stelmanis), which began with the 2017 album Future Politics. It’s been five years since the last Austra album, and on Chin Up Buttercup Stelmanis acknowledges that we’re all just human more than anything else. With her fraying expression on the album cover and it's encouraging title, Austra is subtly telling us “It’s okay to not be okay,” and at the same time “ But maybe it’s not so bad.”
The video for first single “Math Equation” has Stelmanis playing dual roles in a theater of her own kaleidoscopic life events. Her symphonic voice drifts like the ghost of her past memories over a bassy dance groove that is trying to reconcile it all. “Math Equation” tells of a jilted lover seeing her past relationship from a distance and trying to understand what lead to being on the receiving end of banishment.
Chin Up Buttercup isn’t all emotional wreckage though; the album’s title track is playful art pop that is sure to brighten your January. And going even further, you can catch Austra live at Mississippi Studios on January 26th if you’re in need of a dance escape from your winter blues.
Also on the bill is enigmatic performance artist and composer Colin Self, originally from Oregon. Colin’s Self’s body of work is linked to Hari Nef, Holly Herndon, and even experimental opera, making this show a night of queer art you can dance to and won’t want to miss.
ON TOUR: AUSTRA / COLIN SELF on Monday, Jan. 26th, 2026. Doors 7:00PM / Show 8:00PM / (Tickets) 21+
