Ural Thomas: Coffeeshop Conversation #165 / A new album, an overnight sensation at age 77

We’re not in the coffeeshop today. We’re in the studio of Soul singer/composer Ural Thomas, a fixture in the Portland music community for a very long time.

A few years ago he started collaborating with drummer/composer Scotty Magee, who is also known as DJ Cooky Parker and the result is several years of fabulous concerts and now a new album called The Right Time.

The release show is Saturday, September 29 at the Aladdin Theater.

The story goes that he dropped out of the national music scene in the 60s to return to Portland. We’ll find out the real story, and you’ll discover his inspirational place in Portland music culture.

Turns out, this is the right time for the rest of the world to re-discover Ural Thomas. The title tune plays at the end of our conversation.
