Black Joe Lewis: PTP

By SCOTT CUNNINGHAM // PTP, the new single from Black Joe Lewis, is a bluesy, funkified R&B party for your ears.

Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears have a new album coming out in February and if the first track is any indication "Backlash" will be one terrific album.

Based in Austin, Lewis turns the dial way up on the single PTP with a strong, driving groove punctuated with horns and bluesy guitar. One of the guitars conjures up images of Poppa Chubby's track Sweet Goddess of Love and Beer.

PTP isn't a straight-up blues number, though. Rather, think of the track as funkified R&B blues with shades of James Brown, Maceo Parker, and early J. Geils Band, but with smooth soulful vocals along the lines of Otis Redding.

You can catch Lewis next spring when he hits Mississippi Studios on April 9. Get those tix early, 'cause this one is gonna sell out fast.
