Oregon Symphony December: From Yo-Yo Ma to Meow Meow

A very busy month....Handel to Johnny Mathis to a Gospel Christmas and a show on New Year's Eve.

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma performs a sold-out solo recital featuring three of J.S. Bach’s cello suites and music from Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. Meanwhile, holiday music fills the air in December as the Oregon Symphony presents an array of concerts celebrating the season: Hande's Messiah launches the month: Johnny Mathis presents an evening of his classic interpretations of Christmas favorites; the Northwest Gospel Choir returns for the seventeenth year of Gospel Christmas; the holiday film favorite Home Alone with the score played live; Comfort and Joy, designed for the entire family; and the New Year's Eve Celebration featuring Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and cabaret sensation Meow Meow, brings 2015 to a joyful close.

HANDEL’S MESSIAH Dec. 5 at 7:30 pm andDec. 6 at 2 pm at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

 The Performers: The Oregon Symphony, with Music Director Carlos Kalmar; *Shannon Mercer, soprano; *Michael Maniaci, countertenor; *Thomas Cooley, tenor; *David John Pike, baritone; Portland State University Chamber Choir

 These performances mark the five-year return of Handel’s most popular oratorio in its complete version to the Oregon Symphony.

TUESDAY, DEC. 8

JOHNNY MATHIS HOLIDAY SPECIAL Dec. 8 at 7:30 pm at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

 The Performers: The Oregon Symphony, with Resident Conductor Paul Ghun Kim and Guest Conductor Scott Lavender; *Johnny Mathis, vocals

The Program: Mathis and the Oregon Symphony will perform an evening of timeless holiday favorites, such as “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Carol of the Bells,” “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire),” “The Little Drummer Boy,” “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and “Joy to the World.” Johnny Mathis, who remains, at age 80, one of the world’s most magnetic performers, brings his incomparable voice back to the Oregon Symphony for a special night of holiday favorites. Mathis will perform selections from his recently released 3-CD set,The Complete Christmas Collection 1958-2010, which features over five decades of Mathis’ Christmas recordings. Mathis will also present selections from A Very Swingin’ Basie Christmas, which he recorded last year with the Count Basie Orchestra.

GOSPEL CHRISTMAS Dec. 11 and 12 at 7:30 pm; Dec. 13 at 4 pm at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

 The Performers: The Oregon Symphony, with Guest Conductors Charles Floyd and Gary Hemenway, and the Northwest Community Gospel Choir           

The Program: A high energy performance that includes “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “For Unto Us a Child Is Born,” and many other Gospel holiday favorites.Conductor, pianist and composer Charles Floyd has been heard in concert with more than 500 orchestras since 1991—including every Oregon Symphony Gospel Christmas concert since our annual performances began in 1999. He is a regular conductor of the Boston Pops.

HOME ALONE Dec. 19 at 7 pm at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

 The Performers: The Oregon Symphony, with Guest Conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos and the Oregon Repertory Singers

 The Program: Features John Williams’ score performed live by the Oregon Symphony. Macaulay Culkin stars as the left-behind Kevin McCallister, who hilariously outwits two bumbling burglars. Film screened while the orchestra delivers the music live.

COMFORT AND JOY: A CLASSICAL CHRISTMAS Dec. 20 at 3 pm and repeating at 7 pm at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

 The Performers: The Oregon Symphony, with Resident Conductor Paul Ghun Kim; *J’nai Bridges, mezzo-soprano

 The Program: This concert features Christmas and seasonal music the whole family will enjoy, with both classical and pop arrangements of favorite songs and a Christmas medley sing-along for the whole audience.

The Program: Beethoven: Symphony No. 9, “Choral” with its iconic “Ode to Joy”
