By BOB HOWARD // Olive Klug returned to Artichoke for the first time in ten years. With video of her appearance.
Olive told the audience at each performance of a three night residency that Artichoke was the first place they performed an original song on stage when they were 16 years old. They opened each night with that song, “Spirit in Disguise.” Every show was standing room only. And, a "first" for any show at Artichoke, each night enthusiastic fans lined up after the show, the full length of the room, past the stage, to connect with Olive and buy merch.
Olive was at home at Artichoke. They had great things to say about the space, noting how wonderful it was to feel the "global coffeehouse vibe" and the the photo of their hero Joni Mitchell on the wall inspired them to sing a wonderfully magical cover of “Both Sides Now.” Shelley Garrett, Executive Director at Artichoke, said, “Having Olive Klug for a three-day residency was joyful. Olive lives in Nashville now, but they were raised in Portland. Many of their fans had never been to The Artichoke before! Their sets showcased songwriting skills, an amazing voice, warmth and humor.”
Opening Night at Artichoke
Olive’s songs resonated with their audience. They connected them to each song they performed as they told their story of their growth as an artist that started when they recorded and self-released their first EP in 2019, Fire Alarm, from a childhood friend's bedroom. When it was released, they weren’t thinking that this was more than a hobby or a pipe dream. However, they say, “after being laid off of a teaching job in late 2020, they started working as a barista and shortly decided to commit all of their extra energy to an ever-growing community of fans online.”
Last year was a year to remember for them. They released their first full length LP, Don’t you Dare Make Me Jaded, and, ironically, got dropped from their record label, left Los Angeles and moved to Nashville. Without losing any ground they are producing and will release their next record this year. They ended each show with their recently released single “What to Make of Me.” Don’t miss them again.
