KISS has had such a huge impact on rock n' roll and our pop culture since it began in the early seventies. The band's music inspired countless musicians with their classic rock sound and visual style. The man behind that legendary "Spaceman" face paint is Ace Frehley. He is a true guitar hero of the ages and he just came though Portland in support his new release, Origins Vol. 1. The album is a collection of classic covers that includes a who's who of guest performers including Slash, Lita Ford and Mike McCreedy from Pearl Jam to name a few. The album's shining moment and guest appearance is a cover of Free's "Fire and Water" that features KISS's frontman, Paul Stanley. He gives one of his best vocal performances to the track. Ace Frehley sounds strong throughout the album and one album well worth playing loud. It was a treat having this guitar hero play an intimate theater show at the Aladdin Theater. The show for the 10th quickly sold out and a second show for the 9th was then added. Ace and his band did not disappoint either. Live highlights from Origins Vol. 1 included "Parasite" and a stellar cover of the Led Zeppelin classic, "Bring It On Home". Walls of Marshalls blasted out Ace's firey Les Paul guitar playing. The songs from his storied career really got the crowd going. "Back in the New York Groove" featured his light up guitar and included a massive sing along from the crowd. Ace, who is ten years sober now, rocked the KISS classic, "Cold Gin" to close the set. It was the encore that tore the roof off. "Detroit Rock City" and the closer "Deuce" really got the crowd rocking. It was such a real treat to see the Spaceman up close and personal. Ace Frehley has a solid place in rock history, but he showed us all that he is far from done.
