By SCOTT CUNNINGHAM // New album has Seth Walker returning to his family roots
Over the course of the last 20 years, Seth Walker has garnered high praise from the likes of NPR, the Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post. Yet, he unfortunately remains slightly off the mainstream radar.
Walker swings through Portland Tuesday night with a stop at Duff's Garage, a gig that should bring some life to what can be a slow music night in town.
In September Walker released "Gotta Get Back", which earned him an impressive (and well deserved) debut at the No. 6 spot on the Billboard Blues Album Chart. The title track is currently at No. 30 on the Americana Radio chart.
The 12 cuts on the release take a look back at Walker's life, from growing up on a commune in North Carolina to living in some of the musical hotbeds of America, including Austin, Nashville, and New Orleans.
As might be expected from living in these environs, Walker's music draws heavily from blues and Americana. "Gotta Get Back" is laced with his smooth rootsy vocals and solid guitar work. The album also features some terrific organ, piano, strings (contributed by his parents and sister), and wonderfully placed percussion.
ON TOUR: Seth Walker appears at Duff's Garage on Tuesday Jan. 31 at 8:00pm.
