By TOM D'ANTONI // No steel guitar at this weekend's Next Waltz shows, but he'll bring his horn section!
Welcome back to World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan, home of OMN’s Coffeeshop Conversations.
Today we’ve got Paul Brainard, a very recent inductee into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.
If there is a more versatile musician around here I haven’t met him. This weekend (November 25-27) he’s hearding the horn section of the band at the annual Next Waltz show at the Alberta Rose Theatre..
You may know him better as that steel guitarist who plays everything from Ernest Tubb to Led Zeppelin to Thelonious Monk on this instrument.
He’s a native Portlander and has an awful lot to say about his music and his instruments.
How did he react to his Oregon Music Hall of Fame honor? How did he get from being a horn player to fame as a steel guitarist?
Let’s meet Paul Brainard:
Paul wrote later:
Hey Tom thanks, that was fun! Here are two tracks, one from the Pu Pu Platters and a Fun Machine one that is the kind of thing I'm experimenting with lately (also this is one that we used for Tim Sproul's poetry. . .)
Since we we were on the topic of Monk, here's an old recording I did of Ugly Beauty, probably my favorite of his!
Here's all the info you'll need on Next Waltz:
For the 6th year in a row, a stellar lineup of Portland all-stars sing and play the music from The Band's final concert, which happened 40 years ago this month, and was made into the best ever rock and roll concert film and classic album. At Alberta Rose Theatre.
Last year's Next Waltz sold out in advance, so be sure to get your tickets early!
This show features a FULL BAR.
A portion of the proceeds benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation and patrons are encouraged to bring two non-perishable food items for Oregon Food Bank.

The Next Waltz
The Next Waltz is a tribute concert and a benefit for the Jeremy Wilson Foundation and the Oregon Food Bank. It's a recreation of The Band's 1976 concert, movie and album with an all-star lineup of Portland musicians and singers playing the parts of the superstar guests on the original show. It's a Thanksgiving weekend event, 40 years after the original concert.
