By SCOTT CUNNINGHAM // Band returns to Oregon for sold out show
Sisters and road trips usually result in good times and memories, not career defining moments. For Oregon's Closner sisters, though, this is exactly what happened.
Better known as the band Joseph, the three sisters have found themselves the recipients of amazingly good fortune following last year's release of "I'm Alone, No You're Not". They appear Friday night at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland.
Comprised of older sister Natalie and twins Meegan and Allison, the trio have landed on the national stage in a major way. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart in September and the band was named Apple Music's featured New Artist of the Week, both lofty accomplishments. NPR and Paste, among others, have heaped praise on the band since the album's release as well.
And for good reason. "I'm Alone, No You're Not" is a masterful blend of folk and pop, with soaring harmonies and spacious soundscapes. The album is intense and driving, something you wouldn't have expected given the folkish roots of the group.
Crafting the sound for the album stretched the sisters out of their comfort zone. Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Jenny Lewis, First Aid Kit) recorded the album at his studio in Omaha, adding powerful arrangements to the strong lyrics that have been the trio's mainstay.
About that road trip. The three created a playlist to keep them entertained on a trip to Joseph in Eastern Oregon to visit their grandfather named Jo. They titled the list Joseph and the name immediately resonated as it connected their music with their roots.
ON TOUR: Joseph will play at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland on Friday, April 28. Doors are at 7:00PM, show at 8:00PM. The event is sold out.
