The Eels at the Crystal Ballroom on 06/01/18 Photos

By BRENT ANGELO //

The Eels are currently on tour in support of their new album, The Deconstruction. Their June 1st Crystal Ballroom show was a homecoming show for most of the band.

The current four-piece version of the band is lead by the band’s charismatic lead singer, Mark Oliver Everett known to Eels fans simply as “E” and includes Portland’s own Jeff Lyster “The Chet” on guitar, Allen Hunter “Big Al” on bass and Joe Mengis “Little Joe” on drums. The Eels took to the stage with blaring airhorns in hand and got the show off strong with the Who cover, “Out in the Street” and Prince’s “Raspberry Beret”.

The band would go on to play a monster set list of Eels songs from their extensive music catalog going all the way back to the mid 90s. Highlights of the show would include a heavy version of Hombre Lobo’s “Fresh Blood” in an encore and a touching version of Tomorrow Morning’s “I Like The Way This Is Going”. This simple four-piece version of the Eels did not fall short in sound either and the Eels brought a heavy, more rocking sound with them to this Crystal Ballroom show.

The Chet showed his strengths on guitar filling the room with a rich guitar tone. At the heart of this band is E, who brings his on stage humor, sarcasm, but most importantly his songwriting and live performance style. After numerous well received encores, the Eels finished their nearly two-hour show in front of their packed crowd of Portland fans and friends. The Eels proved once again they are a great live band.
