Chelsea Luker: Coffeeshop Conversations #90 / Saxophonist and Soul singer and her many bands

By TOM D'ANTONI // A new album from Joy Tribe and one on the way from the Quadraphonnes...

Welcome back to World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan for another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation.

We’ve got saxophonist/vocalist/composer Chelsea Luker in the coffeeshop today. You know her from the Quadraphonnes sax quartet. You may know her from one of her other bands, Joy Tribe. If you’re quick you can go hear both of them tonight February 16 at the White Eagle. If not, Joy Tribe will have an album release gig at the Alberta Street Pub on Friday, February 24. If you’re hearing this after that, go to their website and look for a gig.

Joy Tribe calls itself a World Funk band. We’ll find out what that means.

She is classically trained, was a founding member of the Quads, had a band called Mars Retrieval Unit for quite a while.

She’s got quite a story. Let’s meet Chelsea Luker:
